Scandi House Step by Step

It's time for a little painting session! In every Issue of the Watercolor Magazine, you find a step-by-step tutorial. I share very simple motives that you can paint in one short painting session. But as simple as the paintings are, you can improve with every painting you make.

Today, we take a little trip to Europe's Northern Countries while we paint a cute house in Scandi Style.

When we visited Finland two years ago, we made a kayak tour, and I took a picture of this cute little house in one corner of the lake.

It is an old water mill, but it looks like the perfect little house. This rust-red color is typical for houses in Scandinavia.

For our painting project, I made some adjustments. Instead of the lake in the foreground, we will be painting a lawn, and we will remove the tree standing in front of the building.

Step 1

First, make a pencil sketch of the house. Then paint the sky completely down to the ground in light blue.

Also, paint the windows in a dark blueish gray. I used Payne's Gray.  Let everything dry before the next Step.

Step 2

Mix Burnt Sienna with red and paint the wall of the house. Leave a white frame around the two windows. Here we work with the white of the paper and don't paint over these areas.

When the red paint is dry, add some very light gray to the roof. Leave some white spaces on the roof.

Let everything dry before the next Step.

Step 3

Mix a light green. I used Ultramarine, Winsor Yellow, and Indian Yellow. Paint the lawn in the foreground.

Add the bushes behind the house. Paint them over the blue of the sky. Tip your brush onto the paper to create little dots, especially on the edges of the bushes. Like this, the sky shines through the greenery. Let everything dry before the next Step.

Step 4

In our final step, we add shadows, which bring everything to life. Use the same colors, but in a darker mix. Add Sepia to the red mix and more Ultramarine to your green tone. Use less water for a darker gray on the roof.

Take a close look at where I added shadows and follow the picture.
