Tutorial: Loose Beach in Watercolor

A painting doesn’t have to be complicated. So if you only have some minutes today, paint this cute little sketch of a beach. In fact, I’m fascinated by how so few brushstrokes recreate something we all know and recognize.

Painting Sketches is the perfect exercise that will lead you to painting bigger pictures. So Let’s start with this loose beach in watercolor.

Step 1

Start with a strip of blue, around 1 cm high. Use a rich and dark blue. In this case, I mixed French Ultramarine with Indigo.

To create some depth, paint the area a little darker on top and get lighter at the bottom.

Step 2

When the sea is dry, we can paint the sky. Use a light blue (here it’s cerulean blue) for the sky.

Leave some white spaces to create clouds and give it a loose shape.

Step 3

Our last step is the actual beach. If you have white watercolor, you can add it into your mix to create this creamy tone. As a base, I used raw sienna.

You can add a little bit of Sepia for some shadows. But don’t add too much, the beach shouldn’t become too dark. Apply your color with some loose brushstrokes, again leaving the edges rough.
