Three Weddings & One Painting

In September, we visited my family and my hometown, Leer, in northern Germany. I had to take one sunny afternoon and sketch a few subjects that really show the heart and soul of that region.

After sketching in the City and at the harbour, we went to this special place that's connected to many meaningful moments for me. It's the Evenburg, one of Germany's 25.000 Castles. Leer isn't a big or famous City, but many places do have a real castle in my Homeland.

This sketch I made on location, sitting on the green lawns surrounding the castle.

This year, Jonathan and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. And after the civil wedding in the city hall, we took pictures at the Evenburg and its surrounding park.

This September, we flew to Germany for my little brother's wedding, which took place in the church right next to the Evenburg. 10 years after my own wedding, I could see my brother walking down the aisle. What a full circle moment!

But that's not enough with weddings. Last year, my friend married even inside the Evenburg, and I immediately knew the perfect wedding gift...

This Painting I made for my dear friend Hannah when she married last year. Their ceremony took place in this beautiful castle.

Here you can also see the difference between a sketch (above) and a painting I made in my Studio with more time and a reference photo.

10 Years ago at our civil Wedding.

Some weeks ago, at my little brother's Wedding.

The Evenburg is surrounded by a beautiful park with old trees, lawns and ponds. It’s like stepping into another time just inside the city. It’s a very romatic place and couldn’t be more fitting for a wedding.

This was a very fast sketch, because it was getting late and I wanted to finish it before darkness. Capturing a scene doesn’t have to take a lot of time.

All this shows that it doesn't have to be complicated to create paintings that tell a story. Or at least they hold a story. For you and everyone you share your stories with.
